Sea Kayaking
The air is thick with fog and the smell of life from the near by slough. Your guide runs you through the do's and don'ts of sea kayaking. The idea is to have minimal impact on the animals and environment. He also reminds you to use copious amounts of sunscreen. When the fog burns off the direct sunlight will be the thought of the day.
Making your way past the dock where you let in and out into the open channel you are a little wobbly and uneasy in the kayak. The uneasiness and wobbles quickly dissipate as your stroke improves. Soon you are gliding like an expert past the harbor seal haul-out. You watch as seals, otters, pelicans, and cormorants live their lives. They watch you too.
The slough is a dramatic backdrop for shorebirds on their migratory path. The birds including the tiny sandpipers, have traveled thousands of miles to come to the slough.
Your guide takes you from the shoreline and out onto a sea kelp bed. There you watch from a safe distance, sea otters opening a shell fish a rock from the sea floor. Off in the distance you watch as anglers fish for the elusive cobia.
Soon it is time to turn your kayak around and head to the dock. Along the way your guide recounts some of the animals and phenomenon you have seen. Your stroke, now perfected, is almost as natural as your walk. Reflecting you take in the beauty of the amazing coastline and muse - "this is an amazing adventure and it's only just started."
