Exlporer Hike: Upper Millard Canyon / Mt. Wilson
with Katja
With several last minute cancellations we ended up being 6 very motivated hikers- ready for a full day of exploring the Mount Wilson area. Starting off at Sunset Ridge Trail we descended into the Upper Millard Canyon, following and criss crossing the creek. Jumping over rocks, following minimal signs of a trail, we indeed "explored" this hike. Thanks to Lucy we all got on the right track after Dawn Mill. Soft shoulders kept us on our toes and one really had to pay attention at times where to put your next foot. The higher we got, the more breathtaking the views.
Overlooking the canyon, the city... our view extended all the way to Catalina Island and Malibu- it was amazing to see how close you are to the city, but yet so far away. We didn't run into any other hikers after passing Dawn Mill until Mt. Lowe Camp. A welcomed feeling of peacfulness and serenity. With elevation gain (total of 2,700 feet) we watched the vegetation change. A lot of variety of terrain. We ended up walking along the old railway tracks, learned about the old Tavern once hosting well off visitors who took the railway up into the mountains for a little retreat back in the 1920's & 30's. Everyone was in good spirits and we all raced down the Sunset Ridge Trail to our finish line! 10.6 miles and 6 hours later- what a great day!
